About our block paving Driveways

A traditional finish that suits Devon homes and takes a beating.

Block paving consists of individual blocks laid by hand, in whatever colour, size, and pattern you choose. It withstands daily traffic and looks right on both older Devon properties and new builds. The real advantage over a poured surface only shows up later: if a block gets damaged, we lift that one block and put a new one in. You’re not redoing the drive.

Where drainage is a factor— a new drive, or widening an existing one. Permeable SUDS-compliant blocks keep you compliant without a separate soakaway.

Why block paving still gets picked.

It is a reliable, repairable choice that gives you more design control than any other surface.

Colour & Pattern Choice

Most people come with an inspiration board. We match it.

Repairability

Damage a block five years in and we replace that block, not the drive.

SUDS Permeable

Permeable block options get you SUDS-compliant without a separate soakaway.

Great for Complex Spaces

Handles tight turning circles better than poured surfaces, which matters on older Devon plots.
How we build it

Good blocks, laid on a base that will not move.

We work mainly with Marshalls and Brett — both carry their own manufacturer guarantees and between them cover most of the colours and finishes people ask for.

Here’s the part nobody asks about but should: block paving lives or dies on what’s underneath it. Get the sub-base depth wrong, or skimp on the edge restraint, and you’ll see it sink or spread within a couple of winters — no matter how good the blocks themselves are. We’ve fixed enough other people’s drives to know that’s usually where it went wrong, not the blocks. So the groundwork gets as much attention as the pattern on top.

Around a week for a typical block drive.

Every block goes down by hand, so it’s slower than resin or tarmac — plan on just over a week for a typical drive, more for anything large or fiddly. You’ll get a firm start date before we begin, not a vague window.

What a block paving drive costs.

Cost comes down to size, access, how much groundwork the base needs, and which block you pick — a plain single-colour block costs less than a mixed pattern in a premium finish. Every quote is itemised, so you’re not looking at one lump number with no way to see what’s driving it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Depends how it’s looked after, honestly. A drive that gets an occasional wash and the joint sand topped up every few years will comfortably do 20-plus years. One that’s left to its own devices will still last, but you’ll see weeds in the joints and the odd sunken corner sooner. Either way, because damaged blocks lift out individually, you’re rarely looking at a full replacement. It’s a patch job, not a redo.

Block paving is a very good middle ground, as it's more than tarmac, but less costly than resin bound. The price can vary depending on the pattern and block you pick, but we aim to accurately quote your drive based on your needs and give an itemised price.

No, and this is honestly the best reason to choose block over resin or tarmac. We lift the damaged block, replace it, and re-sand around it. If we laid the original drive, we’ll usually still know the exact block, so it matches. If someone else laid it and the block’s been discontinued, we’ll get as close a match as we can. Sometimes that means lifting one from a less visible spot and using it there instead.

Less than people expect. A sweep and hose down a few times a year, and topping up the sand in the joints every couple of years so weeds don’t get a foothold. Some people seal it for a deeper colour and easier stain-lifting — that’s a nice-to-have, not a must.

You will be able to walk on your new block paving drive within 1-2 days. For parking and driving your car, we recommend up to 3-5 days depending on external factors such as complexity and weather.
